Well done for getting into Southampton University! We are sure you’ll love it here, and we believe that you are here for a reason. Freshers’ Week is such an exciting time at university because it’s when you get the chance to meet so many new people and decide the type of person you want to be. It’s full of events, new experiences and, most likely, getting lost on the bus… As the Christian Union, we want to make you feel as welcome as possible, so we’re putting on a load of events for you: giving you the chance to get to know us and what we believe, as well as providing the opportunity for you to meet lots of new people. Please come along, enjoy, and ask any questions you may have!
What’s going on this week? Whatever you believe and whatever you may be into, be it sports, music, or just free food - we’d love to meet you and chat with you. Like our Facebook page to keep up to date with events that are going on. If you have any questions about anything, please don’t hesitate to email: firstname.lastname@example.org
International Move-in and Welcome Meal (Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th September)
As people who have further to travel arrive on the 19th and 20th September, keep an eye out for people in blue t-shirts: these will be members of the Christian Union who are there to help you move your stuff into your rooms. Come and say 'Hi' and they’ll be able to give you more information about the local area, university, and christian union.
Once you’ve moved in, why not join us for a relaxed evening with a free meal and some board games?
When? 6-8pm on 19th September.
Where? The Faith & Reflection Centre, Highfield Campus.
Treasure Hunt & Ceildh (Friday 21st September)
Highfield Campus can be quite confusing with lots of buildings in random places… Fear not! Our Treasure Hunt is the perfect way to discover campus with a group of other students before lectures begin. And you may even win a prize while you’re at it… Free snacks and drinks included.
Where? Meet outside Building 42
The Famous Annual SUCU Ceildh is a chance to be introduced to a very British (Celtic) tradition. An evening of dancing in a large group it's great fun and all the instructions, or steps, are "called" as we go along, so everyone can enjoy and join in. A meal will also be provided at this event.
Move-in (Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd September)
As you all arrive at halls on the 22nd and 23rd September, we'll be back in our, very fetching, blue t-shirts: we will be there to help you move your stuff into your rooms. Come and say 'Hi' and we’ll be able to give you more information about the CU.
BBQs, Doughnuts & iCafé (Monday 24th September)
It’s your first day in your new home and to be honest, you’re a bit scared of that big shiny oven in the kitchen. You haven’t cooked for yourself before and you don’t really fancy beans on toast for lunch... We’ll be there to make it easier on your first day! Come and join us for a BBQ in Chamberlain, Glen Eyre, Highfield and Montefiore Halls. Look out for our blue t-shirts from 1-3pm, come and grab a burger (veggie options available), and chat to us about uni life, CU and anything else.
If you’re in one of the other halls - don’t fear! There’ll be more people in blue t-shirts handing out doughnuts from 1-3pm. We’d love to chat and get to know you a bit more.
If you’re an international student the International Café, fondly known as iCafé, is a great opportunity to make new friends, both international and British. It’s a place where you can practice your English, have fun and discover what it means to know Jesus. There are also free drinks and cakes provided! The first week we'll be exploring what Christianity is and what SUCU is about. The following week (1st October) we'll be trying some typical British food.
iCafé runs every Monday during term-time, 8-10pm in the SUSU Cafe (Building 42, Highfield Campus). For our first iCafé on 24th Sept we will be in Highfield Church Centre (SO17 1RL). Join our Facebook group for more info and events.
Hall Group Socials & UK Q&A (Tuesday 25th September)
On Tuesday, each halls of residence have a Hall Group that meets from 7.30-9pm at different places in their halls (follow the link below to get more details). This is a welcoming and open community of students that meet weekly to read and discuss a passage from the Bible that equips and enthuses them with the Good News of Jesus. During this time, they will also pray for each other and the halls that they meet in.
Once a month, Hall Groups organize and run events in their accommodation blocks to love and serve their halls. These events may practically or socially serve the halls, or they may open up direct opportunities to talk with people about the Gospel and further invite them to join Hall Group to investigate more.
On this first Tuesday there will be a social to allow you to get to know each other better. Socials vary between halls; maybe it’ll be a pub social, or a trip to the local ice cream parlour. Find your hall group for more info!
New to the UK? Well you're in luck you can roast (question) some of SUCU's lovely members on British life and culture.
Join us on Highfield Campus to bring and share some food with others, play games, talk about life in Southampton and meet new friends.
Where? On the green outside Building 44
Bunfight (Wednesday 26th September)

This is an opportunity for you to come and have a kick around, play a game of rounders, or even try your hand at the phenomenon Spikeball – a CU favourite.
