We love our local churches here in Southampton, we’re so thankful for the faithful and trustworthy relationships we have with many of them across the city. We want to help you as best we can to find a church that you can call your home at uni, and perhaps even beyond!
The Christian Union isn’t a church, but a body of believers on campus focused on giving everyone the opportunity to hear and respond to the good news and love of Jesus. We’d encourage you to find a church as quickly as you can, so that you can grow in your faith and be part of a larger and more diverse family. Take a look at Acts 2:42-47 and Hebrews 10:24-25 to see the example God sets for us through the early believers. This video from UCCF is also pretty helpful.
Sow how do you choose from all the churches in Southampton? Well we’ll be the first to admit this can be tricky, especially if you’ve never had to choose a church before. Here are some suggestions of what to do:
- Pray! Ask God to show you in which church He wants you to settle.
- Think about what you’re used to (consider worship and teaching style). You may want something similar to what you know, or something completely different. Look for a church where you can engage with the teaching, be challenged to apply it to your life, and where you feel welcome in their community and comfortable to invite others along.
- Get involved with Church Search and have a read of the booklet we produce to go with it.
Get stuck in at whichever church you choose to settle! Make it a priority to get to church as much as you can – Sunday gatherings, prayer meetings, small groups – so that you can be part of the community. Worship God together, hear from His word together, encourage each other together, and grow together. As you get more stuck in, why not look for ways to use your gifts to serve in church? There’s likely to be opportunities for children’s work, playing in the band, or welcoming as people come in.
At the beginning of each academic year we run Church Search that will take you around to the churches that you want to go to. There’ll be people ready to meet you in central locations and take you to their own churches. They will be able to answer any questions you have, introduce you to other people there, and help you get an idea of what their church is like.
After Church Search finishes, feel free to continue looking around, but we’d encourage you to settle at one place by Christmas at the latest. We’re praying that all of you quickly find a Church you can call home for your time at University.
